Taking some time off to get everything in the house packed up for the move back to the US from Japan and to get some medical stuff taken care of - i'll be back in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Hasta luego.

Quick post while i should be getting ready for work -

Thanks to everyone who helped make our 20th anniversary tour a success. If you didn't purchase the fantastic commemorative print by SHAG, we still have some left. They're $250 each, signed and numbered, with proceeds going toward Modern Committee preservation advocacy. To purchase a print, call the L.A. Conservancy office at (213) 623-2489.

"The Hitcher" from "Pick of the Litter" is up for auction on eBay.

Anyone out there ever try to see what the phone numbers lead to?

Friday, September 17, 2004

The Modern Committee's 20th Anniversary Tour is on the 18th and 19th, beginning in just about 12+ hours for anyone lucky enough to be in Southern California.

The chance to pick up this great serigraph ("L.A. Modern"), bow to the greatness of Mr. Julius Shulman, visit the "oldest remaining Big Boy in America," and check out a Case Study House (#8) designed by Eames.

Shag will be on hand signing programs and prints Saturday, September 18 at 4:00 pm at the world famous Cinerama Dome on Sunset Blvd.

What will I be doing that day? Probably the laundry.

Also on the 18th of September is the opening reception (from 6:00 to 9:00 PM) for "Icons of Exotica: The Photography of Douglas Nason" at the J. Moore Gallery.

Anchoring the exhibition are 28 large-scale (18x22-inch) black-and-white images printed on metallic paper in semi-sepia tones. Their timeless look reflects Nason’s admiration of photographer Edward Curtis (1868-1952), who documented several Native American tribes before much of their tradition was lost through assimilation or genocide, Nason says. The exhibition also comprises some 20 smaller color photographs portraying such renowned sites as Machu Pichu, Peru, and Abu Simbel, Egypt, as well as lesser-known locals, including Nan Madal, Pohnpei, Tiahuanaco, Bolivia and Tikal, Guatemala.

Mr. Nason is a partner in the Copro/Nason Gallery and has been behind a bunch of great shows and books, including "Night of the Tiki." The show runs until the 30th of October.

Two pretty interesting events in one weekend. They're not 100% Shag-related, but both would probably give a good peek at Mr. Agle's influences.

Sure, you can listen to Led Zeppelin without having to pick up anything by Willie Dixon or watch "Star Wars" without having to see Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress," but I for one am an obsessive-compulsive idiot who hopes to die with the most trivial knowledge.

Finally, an apologetic tip o' the propeller beenie to the good peoples at Stuff-o-Rama for not giving credit to them for the "Chaser Tees" info from September 13th.

Monday, September 13, 2004

I was just at the Magic Trade Show a couple of weeks ago and my sales rep from Chaser Tees said they will no longer be producing shirts as Shag has decided to call it quits in the merchandise dept and focus solely on his paintings. ...is this true or did Shag just get fed up with this company and decide to go someplace else?

Anyone else heard this? Is ShagCorp™ cutting down a bit on the merchandising?

The clock is ticking for eBay auction of the "Lord Invader at the Gold Coast Bar, Hamburg" original from the Vintage Animation Gallery.

Meant to post this when I first saw it a few days back, but got distracted by work and other meaningless things. Well, you live and learn, don't you?

Shooting Gallery has posted a gallery for their 2004 Tiki Show -

Shag's contributions are:

"In the Ratongo Room" - original - $7,000 - SOLD
(Thanks to roving reporter D. Imura for the update that it's been sold)
Is it me... or does the guy have three hands?

"Banana Liqueur" - serigraph - $825.00

"The Envious Girl Friend" - serigraph - $850.00
(attention nitpickers - site says it's from an edition of 150 - yes, I think they meant 99)

"Green Wahine" - serigraph - $300.00
(attention nitpickers pt II - site says it's from an edition of 150 - yes, I think they meant 300)

"Idol Conversation" - serigraph - $750.00 - SOLD

$825 for "Banana Liqueur" - wow, remember when serigraphs were cheep? When something like "The Pick Up" was released in '01 for the low low price of $18.00?

Wednesday, September 08, 2004

The "Shows" page was updated to note that M-Modern will be getting the first solo show of the year - "A Gracious Oasis: Paintings From Palm Springs" in January of 2005.

It couldn't happen to a nicer gallery - this should be a good one!

Ten days until the ModCon in Southern California and I'm stuck in Northern Japan until November - oh the humanity!

If ShagMart reserves (and fully uses) the right to ban individuals who repeatedly re-sell items, what do they do when a gallery they support repeatedly re-sells items?

In the past 7 months, eBay seller "wwwflameritecom" has sold nine (9) copies of "The Missing Suitors."

Check out their most recent auctions and scroll down to see - "This Auction brought to you by WWW.OX-OP.COM Check out our site for other rare art pieces and toys!"

A wholehearted tip o' the deerstalker hat to Mr. Krebs for finding a link to the Apart Gallery in London, future home to "The Call of Kapu"! Click "Contact" to see directions to the gallery and hours.

Jason, from StarLite Room, sent a picture of Shag's piece for the "7 Year Itch" show -

Amazingly enough, they still have a few Cocktail Cabinets left too! This was the best Shag-related release since House Industries' "Object d'Art."

We're looking forward to moving back to the US in November so we can hang ours up (thin walls here).

Oh, to be Southern Californian and Mod!

You get Mondo Lounge on Saturday, October 16th, but before that you get "ModCom 20/20/20 - 20 Years, 20 Sites, 20 Bucks" on September 18th and19th!

Join the Modern Committee on a 20th anniversary tour celebrating the 'greatest hits' of L.A. Modern architecture preserved in the past two decades. This two-day, self-driven tour spans L.A. County from the Pacific Palisades to Downey, highlighting 20 sites (10 on each day). It includes a booksigning with legendary architectural photographer Julius Shulman and first dibs on a special, limited-edition print by Shag.

Mr Shulman is the photographer behind "Modernism Rediscovered," a book that makes me want to hit my head against the wall in envy! Definately a man whose ring I'd kiss...

"L.A. Modern" - 13 color serigraph, 20" x 28", edition size = 200 prints.

Any kind souls who attend and feel the need to get a copy of the serigraph for me, I'd greatly appreciate it! I'll pay you back (honest)!

Any kind souls who attend and feel the need to kiss Mr Shulman's rind for me, I'd greatly appreciate that too!! I have no idea how I could pay anyone back for that!!

The images are up. (Bottomless Cocktail Redux anyone?)

Paul Smith's site is a dense, mostly un-informative site, so here's a link to a much better map care of Maporama.com.

Maybe I'm just being a Negative Ned about the "Shag With A Twist: A Murder Mystery told in Music and Dance" that was mentioned on Shag's News page.

I just can't stop thinking about bad community theatre a la "Waiting for Guffman" or "A Streetcar Named Marge"...
