Thursday, July 20
3:00-4:30 Masters of Lowbrow Art
A new generation of painters who draw their inspiration from comics, cartoons, and pop culture are now exhibiting in galleries worldwide, to great popular acclaim. They defy art world expectations and prove that museums can be fun! Among the most extraordinary are Josh Agle (The Art of Shag), Tim Biskup (The Jackson 500), Isabel Samaras (Devil Babe’s Big Book of Fun!), Mark Todd (Watcha Mean, What’s a Zine?), and Esther Pearl Watson (Unlovable). Get the lowdown on the lowbrow as they highlight their finest work and share inside info about their imagery, influences, and unique techniques with author Michael Dooley (The Education of a Comics Artist). Room 5AB

Saturday, July 22
2:30-4:00 Spotlight on Shag
If every picture tells a story, Josh Agle (better known as Shag, a contraction of the last two letters of his first name and the first two of his last) has hundreds of stories to tell. His work, punctuated by a playful, vividly colored style, has entered the pop culture pantheon by storm. Comic-Con special guest Shag talks about his work and answers your questions in this special event. Room 6A

Per Shag.com - "An exclusive folio of 4 original Shag prints, "Crypto-Zoological Species of North America," will be available at Comic-Con only. The edition size is 100, so come early."

Dark Horse will be giving away eight collectible buttons during Preview Night, Wednesday, July 19th. "Only 1,000 of each button have been produced, so when they are gone, they are gone forever!"

Hello again -

Had a few too many seizures the past eight weeks and, since this isn't helping pay the medical bills, this here blog is closed for the summer season (at least).

Also, i won't be at the Comic-Con in San Diego or in Chicago for 'After Dark' like i had previously hoped (i shouldn't be spending my money on serigraphs at this time).

Take care -

My son (aka The Little Baron) and i were watching the extras on Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" DVD and i noticed that Pixar's Pete Docter was wearing a Shag-designed Toes On The Nose aloha shirt.

(We're trying to get our son to cut down on the smoking, but his mom and i have told him that the gogo dancers can stay as long as he feeds them and cleans up after them...)

-----

Digging through my list of links, here's yet another one i've yet to post - a short article in Variety from April 2005 about Disneyland's 50th Anniversary.

"I have had dreams about riding the Matterhorn and the car going off track and flying off into space," he says. "I don't think Disneyland would ever let me depict that in a painting, but it's there bottled up."

Also, while looking up info about Forrest J. Ackerman, i noticed that Uncle Forry will be attending this year's San Diego Comic-Con along with Josh 'Shag' Agle!

This is his first appearance at Comic-Con.

Been forgetting to post this for a few weeks now, but the "The Juxtapoz Group Show 2006" will be Ox-Op Gallery's last show.

From "No More Pooping Bambis," from the Minneapolis/St. Paul City Pages -

[Ox-Op owner Tom] Hazelmyer takes pains to point out that he's only shutting down the brick-and-mortar entity, while expanding the gallery's online presence and launching a new line of art toys. Likewise, he hopes to continue the relationship with SooVac that commenced with part one of "Juxtapoz," which opened in SooVac's Lyndale Avenue space.

---

Ox-Op filled an unoccupied niche in these parts, mixing sold-out exhibitions by the high-profile lowbrow likes of Tiki-god Shag and creature king Gary Baseman with shows by lesser-known locals. (Minneapolis's own Charles S. Anderson graced the Ox-Op walls with the image of a deer taking a dump.)
From the Ox-Op Gallery web-site's "News" section -

We plan on focusing our energy on several big projects that have been in the works, and throwing a monster blowout like we just did with the Juxtapoz 2006 Group Show seemed the perfect bookend to this chapter of the OX-OP entity as it transforms. The show being split with Soovac was no coincidence, as they’ll be hosting several OX-OP events in the coming year. Also we want to focus on new artists, and to be honest, that becomes all but impossible with a bricks and mortar space, and simple math. Also getting artists that have quickly become more established, back to the Twin Cities as they now get flooded with offers from NYC, Tokyo, Paris, etc., has become a far more massive challenge than in years past. We hope to start hosting some online shows for some emerging talent and some old faves as well. More on that soon –so stay tuned!

Tonya Newton of retropopart.net had an interesting Shag siting in Nevada:

Just returned from a trip to Laughlin, NV where we stayed at the River Palms. Noticed a video slot machine that sure does look an awful lot like Shag's work. I just know it's either his work or a damn good likeness. It's called "After Hours" by Aristocrat (an Australian gaming company) and is copyrighted 2003. I've looked all over online and can't find anything on this machine or anything about Shag authorizing his work to be used on a slot machine. It is very cool. Yes, I did win $20.00 on it. I want one for my home!!! There are a couple of girls, a bartender, another man, and yes even a fez monkey. The barware symbols even look like his work. Maybe you can find something out that I can't find. That one machine was the only one I saw at the River Palms (believe me, I've searched!) and didn't notice anymore in any of the other casinos I ventured into. Wonder if Shag knows?!
All i've found so far is that the Harrah's in Tahoe and New Orleans have that model slot machine too.

greg356 is now selling his White Devil Tiki Mug #179 (of 250) on the eBay.

AND FINALLY... Below are the poll results for Most Requested Serigraph -

My fav? "An Extraordinary Evening" from Detroit's "The Leisure Principle."

The Baroness's fav? "The Raft Of Medusa" from London's "The Call Of Kapu." Interesting to note that "The Raft Of Medusa" was the clear winner of the "Call of Kapu" poll with 56% - 2nd place was "Five Pills" with 20%.

The Little Baron's fav? Seeing that he's a ten-year-old boy and none of the images involve anyone falling down a flight of stairs or catching a football in the nuts, he abstained from voting.

A new poll will be popping up when the images from "On The Shoulder Of Giants" are posted in the next week or so.

Von Dutch Tribute II
May 20 to Jun 10, 2006
Copro/Nason Gallery, Santa Monica,CA

(Nice looking 420-page "Art of Von Dutch" book to be released too)

[Word of caution, it would probably be a bad idea to wear any items from that Von Dutch clothing line allo the kids were wearing a while back to this show...]

Page 54 - Shag Bearbrick pictured, last row on right

Page 55 (bottom) - Shag Bearbrick pictured, 4th row back on right

Page 99 - Open-edition "Shagquarium" still available for $20.00

Great issue, good article about the history of pinstriping and I'm really digging Lynne Naylor + Chris Reccardi's work, especially Reccardi's painting on page 45, "Spaceport Op Art," which M Modern is selling a serigraph of as part of their "The Future" group show.

-----

Speaking of shows at Copro/Nason, their latest show includes Mike Leavitt's Art Army "Juxta-Posers" with a Shag action figure featuring 11 poseable parts, cocktail, and brush.
